“People like us don’t get to live a normal life,” Sadie Sink says in Spider-Man: Brand New Day. The Stranger Things star is addressing Tom Holland’s Spider-Man, who in this film faces the most intriguing antagonist across his four solo outings to date. But – like us?

The identity of Sink’s character has been kept a secret in the run-up to release – and will not be revealed here. However, her game-changing arrival will surely make fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) lose their minds.

The film is directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, who previously helmed Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings and this year’s Marvel TV hit Wonder Man.

He clearly gets Spider-Man – from delivering the visceral thrills of the web-slinger swinging all over Manhattan (with some great point-of-view shots) to the humour and romance that come with Parker’s relationship with best friend Ned (Jacob Batalon) and love-of-his-life MJ (Zendaya).

At the outset, Ned and MJ are roommates at MIT – neither aware that they were all too familiar with Spider-Man’s alter ego, Peter Parker, following the events of 2021’s Spider-Man: No Way Home, when Doctor Strange bewitched the world into forgetting Parker’s secret identity.
