“My mother always said that common sense is a superpower,” says Dawid Koegelenberg, general manager of the Fusion Resort in Cam Ranh, a coastal city in southeast Vietnam.

Why is he talking about common sense? Well, after budget carrier HK Express launched four direct flights a week to the city, it seemed perfectly sensible for Koegelenberg to have the resort give Hong Kong guests a special welcome.

Until the end of October, the resort will offer guests flying in from Hong Kong airport transfers from Cam Ranh International Airport, 15 minutes away from the Fusion Resort, plus a light evening meal to welcome them and complimentary late checkout for the evening return flight to Hong Kong.

Koegelenberg has the ability to look at things from different viewpoints, something instilled in him from an early age – also thanks to his mother.

He grew up in Nababeep, a small town in South Africa, two hours away from the Namibian border. His father was a farmer and his mother was a teacher at a Bantu Education school, a racially segregated school during apartheid.

“Growing up in a small town, you can’t wait to get out,” he says.
