When it comes to horses, Hong Kong does not play around. But beyond the roar of the racecourses, one organisation harbours a dedicated community that focuses on connection over competition and on nurturing hands-on relationships with the animals.

The Hong Kong Pony Club (HKPC) is less about spectacle and more about stewardship, rooted in a shared, sincere appreciation for horses and a devotion to equine welfare and companionship.

Founded in the early 1970s, it has quietly steered generations of riders for more than five decades, not just in competitive skills but in responsibility, friendship and respect for the animal at the centre of the sport.

Currently, there are around 200 members across the city, with ages ranging from six to 25.

“At the crux of it, it was – and is – about horsemanship,” says Jolene Otremba, the club’s current district commissioner. “It’s about building relationships between riders and their horses [and] truly understanding horse welfare.”
