How the Hong Kong Pony Club fosters young riders’ respect and nurtures relationships
Hong Kong Pony Club members learn horsemanship, build lasting friendships, and develop a lasting respect for horses and ponies

The Hong Kong Pony Club (HKPC) is less about spectacle and more about stewardship, rooted in a shared, sincere appreciation for horses and a devotion to equine welfare and companionship.
Founded in the early 1970s, it has quietly steered generations of riders for more than five decades, not just in competitive skills but in responsibility, friendship and respect for the animal at the centre of the sport.
Currently, there are around 200 members across the city, with ages ranging from six to 25.
“At the crux of it, it was – and is – about horsemanship,” says Jolene Otremba, the club’s current district commissioner. “It’s about building relationships between riders and their horses [and] truly understanding horse welfare.”
