What to do in China’s Zhongshan, a food and shopping paradise on Hong Kong’s doorstep
From restaurants serving top Cantonese food to shopping streets and Sun Yat-sen’s former home, Zhongshan provides a feast for the senses

In the early 2000s, many Hongkongers invested in spacious houses in Zhongshan, in mainland China’s Guangdong province, for use as weekend getaways. These houses were bigger than anything buyers could have afforded at home, allowing them to feel like they owned an actual mansion.
From Hong Kong Island, one bus option departs from Stewart Road, outside the Novotel Century hotel in Wan Chai, terminating at the Transportation Building in Shiqi, in central Zhongshan.
This is my uncle’s preferred route because the end point is two minutes from his favourite pigeon restaurant, BaoBaoDian Signboard. The restaurant, nestled behind some commercial buildings, could be considered a secret hideaway, except for several large billboards on the main intersection of Jiatong Road and Zhongshanyi Road letting you know it is close.
