Fame and celebrity

The pair married in 2019 at the Old Marylebone Town Hall in London, welcomed their first child in 2020 and are rumoured to have a second child together

Back in the early 2000s, Jude Law was at the height of his fame. The Talented Mr Ripley was a hit, as was Steven Spielberg’s A.I. – and the English actor was regularly topping Sexiest Man Alive lists.

However, the 52-year-old recently revealed on The Playlist’s Discourse podcast that he had been offered a part at the time that even he felt he wasn’t right for: Superman.

“There was a process of flirtation going on,” he explained. “And I always resisted because it just felt like [off].” He added that the producers even sent him the suit in hopes it would change his mind. “I tried it on and I looked in the mirror and part of me initially was like, ‘Wow, this would be a [good thing],’ and then I just thought, ‘No, you can’t, you can’t do this. You can’t.’”

Reluctant to go down the big-budget superhero route, Law found his way to other, more low-key projects instead – and to a more low-key existence altogether after marrying his current wife Phillipa Coan.

The couple were first spotted together in public in 2015 at the UK’s Hay Festival, according to People magazine, but have largely remained out of the limelight since then. So what else do we know about the actor’s wife of six years?

What does Phillipa Coan do?

Coan is a London-based behavioural psychologist and business coach. She founded her own company, Stride, which she describes as “a company dedicated to putting people at the heart of an organisation’s environmental strategy”.

According to her company’s website, she has a PhD in environmental behaviour change and is a visiting research fellow at Leeds University Business School.

When did they get married?

Coan was first linked to Law in 2015 after being introduced by mutual friends. They got married in 2019 at the Old Marylebone Town Hall in London. Coan is the Sherlock Holmes star’s second wife. He was previously married to actress and producer Sadie Frost, but they divorced in 2003.
