  • Forget the award winners – here at Style it’s all about who wore it best, from Selena Gomez’s barely there Oscar de la Renta gown to Olivia Rodrigo’s 150,000-stone Swarovski statement
  • Big winners Taylor Swift and Shakira both chose very different pieces from the Versace wardrobe, Doja Cat went for a spider’s web get-up, and Nicki Minaj stayed on brand ahead of Pink Friday 2

A less stuffy, fussy antidote to the Grammys, MTV’s annual Video Music Awards (VMAs) have been a venue for celebrities to display avant-garde, experimental attire since its initial ceremony in 1984.

This year’s ceremony also carries extra weight as one of the only prominent red carpet events held throughout Hollywood’s ongoing strikes.

It was surprise city at Tuesday’s ceremony. Within the first half-hour, 90s boy band NSync reunited on stage to present the first award for best pop video – which went to Taylor Swift – while Lil Wayne opened the show with a performance of his new single “Kat Food”.

The night was packed full of live appearances: Olivia Rodrigo presented her cheeky pop-punk single “Get Him Back!” while Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion brought “Bongos” to life. Demi Lovato played a rock ‘n’ roll medley of her biggest hits.

But here at Style, we turned our gaze off the stage and onto the pink carpet instead. So what did the pop divas wear, and who wore it best? From Taylor Swift to Doja Cat, here are our six favourite looks of the night.

1. Taylor Swift
