Following the release of Selena y Los Dinos: A Family’s Legacy, we take a look back at the Queen of Tejano Music’s biggest fashion moments

It’s always a good time to celebrate the Queen of Tejano Music, Selena Quintanilla aka Selena. Netflix’s latest documentary, Selena y Los Dinos: A Family’s Legacy, does just that.

The documentary was directed by Isabel Castro, with Selena’s siblings Suzette Quintanilla and A.B. Quintanilla III serving as producers. It features never-before-seen footage of the legendary songstress from her family’s archives, making for an intimate look back at Selena – from the woman she was to the evergreen star she became.

Rather than focusing on her tragic death – the “Como La Flor” singer was murdered by the president of her fan club, Yolanda Saldívar – the Netflix title shines the light on “her life, our life and our growth”, notes Suzette, per Complex. Selena’s mother, Marcella Quintanilla, who usually keeps out of the public eye, makes an appearance as well, offering a rare glimpse into her Grammy-winning daughter’s inner world.

In the spirit of reminiscence, let’s take a look back at Selena’s distinct style.

The Selena aesthetic, which continues to influence the fashion industry today, was an inimitable blend of her Tejano roots and the dazzling glamour of stars like Janet Jackson, Whitney Houston and Madonna. She famously designed her own stage costumes with the help of Mama Quintanilla, ensuring that her sartorial choices were one of a kind.

Red lips and big hair were the signature style elements of the “Bidi Bidi Bom Bom” singer. She also loved a bedazzled bustier as much as she adored a fringed jacket.
