With the Fifa World Cup 2026 under way, we asked players from a prominent Hong Kong women’s team about fashion, and the professionals that inspire them – from Lionel Messi to Mia Hamm

The Fifa World Cup 2026 will be the first to be held across three countries: the US, Canada and Mexico, and the first to feature 48 teams. It will also be the most fashion-forward tournament in football history.
After its TikTok- and Pinterest-fuelled peak in 2022, the football jersey-as-streetwear aesthetic championed by celebs like Bella Hadid and Hailey Bieber is finding fresh momentum thanks to the World Cup.
Sporting giants Nike and Adidas tapped several designers and brands to create capsule collections for different national teams. Among the resulting collaborations, the Nike x Virgil Abloh Archives collection for the US men’s national team, and the Nike x Nocta x Canada tracksuits have already gone viral on the internet. Meanwhile, Loewe recently signed a four-year deal to dress Spain’s national team, while Simone Rocha – known for her romantic, coquettish codes – sent a distinctly sporty line-up down the runway at London Fashion Week.

As the spotlight falls on football culture and what players wear on and off the pitch, we dropped in on seven amateur female players at the Hong Kong Football Club to talk style, sport and the sisterhood that draws them to the game.

What first drew you to football, and what has kept you hooked?

It was my father who took me to my first football match.

I play as a winger or forward, so I’m responsible for attacking. Because I’m tall, there was a time when I was put in as a goalkeeper. But I knew what really got me hooked on football was the feeling when I scored.

Did you have a football role model growing up?

Someone I look up to is the legendary captain of the Hong Kong women’s football team, Chan Wing-sze.
