Matthew McConaughey, Elon Musk and Joe Rogan are among those who live in this city renowned for its barbecue, cowboy boots and home-grown brands like Kendra Scott
Ten years ago, before my first visit to Austin, someone described it to me as “a mix of Los Angeles and San Francisco, with great barbecue and live music”. While that description is somewhat accurate, it would be a disservice to compare Austin to any other city in the US or elsewhere. The capital of Texas, Austin, is the beating heart of the state: smaller, more fun and way more laid-back than Houston or Dallas.
Thanks to a burgeoning tech sector, lower cost of living, a thriving economy and a very relaxed lifestyle, the city has in recent years attracted a large number of out-of-state residents from places like California. Elon Musk, Matthew McConaughey and Joe Rogan are among those who call it home.
This influx of wealth has significantly changed the city: luxury residential developments and corporate towers have risen in previously rundown neighbourhoods while in some areas, driverless taxis seem to outnumber regular cars. What has stayed the same, however, is Austinites’ friendliness, not to mention the city’s quirky vibe.

Texas may be the undisputed kingdom of cars and pickup trucks, but the best way to explore Austin is on foot. When it comes to location, it’s hard to beat Four Seasons Austin. The lakefront property is situated a couple of blocks from North Congress Avenue, the city’s main thoroughfare, and boasts a lovely garden and pool area with direct access to Lady Bird Lake, a reservoir that is part of the Colorado River.

The hotel, which first opened 30 years ago, underwent a full renovation in 2018. As you’d expect from the Canadian chain that has become synonymous with luxury hospitality, its Austin outpost delivers on all fronts: impeccable service, elegant rooms with views of the lake or the city’s skyline, top-notch eateries and an award-winning spa.
