The watchmaker’s beloved series has new bimetal models, one with a micro-rotor and a stone blue dial, and the other an automatic 36mm in deep ruby

Some bimetallic magic has been sprinkled over a daring collection from one of Switzerland’s most sought-after independent watchmakers. Parmigiani Fleurier has been drawing the attention of knowledgeable watch lovers ever since it was founded in 1996 by visionary watchmaker and restorer Michel Parmigiani, a man steeped in the history of horology. The brand’s watches exude his love for the craft of watchmaking and showcase an obsessive attention to detail, with sophisticated aesthetics that highlight classy, understated dials and slimline profiles.

In 2021, to mark its 25th anniversary, Parmigiani Fleurier launched a collection that would take it into uncharted territory: Tonda PF. With a name that refers to the round canvases on which Renaissance painters created their masterpieces, the collection is similarly a canvas for horological experimentation. Over just a few years since its launch, it has come in a remarkable variety of iterations, showcasing a spectrum of watchmaking complications. Among those expressions have been versions featuring chronographs, flying tourbillons, openworked movements and perpetual calendars showcasing not just the usual Western calendar but also the Islamic and Chinese versions.

The Micro-Rotor was among the original line-up of Tonda PF models and remains an enduring favourite. Now it’s available in a new expression that dynamically combines rose gold and stainless steel. The two metals intertwine in a sinuous dance across its case and bracelet, with alternating polished and satin surfaces, complemented by a platinum bezel featuring the brand’s trademark knurled pattern.

It surrounds a hand guilloche dial in a stone blue hue, showing off Parmigiani Fleurier’s signature grain d’orge (“grain of barley”) pattern. The watch is powered by the automatic PF703 calibre, featuring the rose gold micro-rotor that gives the watch its name – one of the rarest of watchmaking complications – again adorned with grain d’orge guilloche.

The 36mm Automatic is one of the best-loved lines within the Tonda PF collection, and one of the most decorated: it won the ladies’ watch prize at the Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève, the Oscars of watchmaking, in 2022. The new Tonda PF Automatic Steel Gold Deep Ruby refines the model with a 36mm case, again in stainless steel and rose gold, with a knurled bezel and alternating polished and satin bracelet finishes. As the name suggests, the dial is in a deep ruby colour, in grain d’orge guilloche, and features 12 baguette cut diamond indices totalling 0.36 carats.
