How did he get into acting?
Holbrook was inspired to pursue acting by the 1998 drama film Slam, he told Interview magazine. The Big C star received formal training at film school, learning from teachers at New York University and Columbia University, though he did not complete his degree. His tuition fees came from working graveyard shifts for UPS before he dropped out. Holbrook then joined a theatre company at the advice of fellow actor Michael Shannon, starting out as a carpenter before he began acting. He made his screen debut in Gus Van Sant’s Milk (2008). During a conversation with Harper’s Bazaar, Holbrook shared that the director had rejected a screenplay he sent him, offering him the role of Denton Smith instead.
