Meet Laurie Davidson, who plays mama’s boy Daniel in The Girlfriend

He began his career in theatre, then started acting for the small screen in TNT’s 2017 series Will – but who’s his IRL girlfriend?
Based on Michelle Frances’ novel of the same name, The Girlfriend is Prime Video’s latest psychological thriller, which premiered on September 10. The series stars Robin Wright – who also directed three episodes – and follows her character Laura, a possessive mother who grows suspicious of her son Daniel’s beautiful new girlfriend, Cherry. The story unfolds through the alternating perspectives of Laura and Cherry (played by Olivia Cooke), and pits the two women against each other.

Struggling to keep the peace between his mother and girlfriend, Laurie Davidson’s character, Daniel, is a mama’s boy, a hopeless romantic, and quite easily the least likeable character in the series. In fact, the character’s lack of appeal is so notable that a recent Vogue article even questioned whether he’s the show’s true antagonist.
But who is Laurie Davidson, the charming actor with a thriving career behind The Girlfriend’s seemingly incompetent male lead?
He was a theatre actor

Davidson is an English actor from London’s Dulwich neighbourhood. Before starring in TV shows like The Girlfriend, Davidson had a career in theatre and studied at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art, from which he graduated in 2016.
While in university, Davidson landed a role in a production of Anton Chekhov’s The Seagull, where he was discovered by his agent. The same agent got him an audition as the lead in TNT’s 2017 series Will – based on the early life of William Shakespeare.
