Fame and celebrity

The Italian actor talks about landing the Netflix show, working with Lily Collins, and what it’s like being a ‘heartthrob’

Eugenio Franceschini might not be a household name yet, but he’s surely on his way to quickly becoming one. The 34-year-old Italian actor shot to international stardom last year as the charming Marcello Muratori on season four (part two) of Netflix’s Emily in Paris, which aired in September 2024.

His portrayal of the Italian heir who sweeps Emily off her feet during a secondment to Rome captivated the show’s viewers so thoroughly that they took to social media to fawn over the character’s good looks, understated yet polished style, and no-nonsense approach to dating.

We met with Franceschini less than a month before the show’s highly anticipated fifth season release – on December 18 – at the “Fashion to Reconnect: A Tale of Two Style Capitals” exhibition in Hong Kong. Presented by the HKSAR Government and supported by the Consulate General of Italy – and part of the Hong Kong Fashion Fest – the event highlighted the importance of sustainability in fashion and showcased the creative processes and works of Hong Kong and Italian designers.

Is this your first visit to Hong Kong? What do you think of it?

Yes, it’s my first time in Hong Kong. There was no time to discover the city and the culture, so maybe next time. The thing that impressed me from the first moment is that everything here is enormous compared to Italy. You feel like you’re an ant. It’s a strange feeling, given that the rhythm of life is different, and the rhythm of speaking and driving. Everything is different compared to Italy. It’s beautiful, too, to discover a different culture. I would have liked to spend more time here, but maybe next time.

Your role in Emily in Paris and the show itself have such a strong connection to the fashion world. How would you describe your personal style? What are some of your favourite brands?

It’s very simple. When I’m not working, I love to wear comfortable clothes because I have two young kids and I don’t care about the clothes. I just need something comfortable to play with them in. One of my favourite brands is Stone Island. I’ve never worked with them, but I would love to collaborate with them. Maybe in the future.

What are your thoughts on sustainable fashion?

I don’t know much about sustainable fashion, but I think that in my everyday life I do what I can. I don’t like to waste in general – in fashion, with food, with water and with everything. I try to teach my kids to finish all of their meals every time. I don’t like to waste money or clothes. I mean, [I’m fine to] buy something for the right price. The point is to give the right value to things. I can pay a lot for something that is handmade by a craftsman, where I can see the passion, the materials, the fabrics and the uniqueness of the product. I think it’s worth it. Otherwise, I don’t like to waste my time and money. I think this philosophy can be applied to everything in life.
