Meet Alex Hall, freestyle skiing’s 2022 Olympic champion competing at Milano Cortina 2026

The Switzerland-raised gold medallist, who’s in a long-term relationship with a fellow skier, says he’s prioritising fun over defending his title
Here’s what to know about skier Alex Hall.
He’s been skiing his whole life

Alex Hall was born in September 1998 in Alaska to professor parents. He grew up skiing in Zurich, before moving to Park City, Utah, at age 16 to attend a ski-specific high school.
Hall was inspired to try freestyle skiing after watching videos of his father “hot-dogging” – as performing tricks on skis was known before freestyle skiing became a sport. He told People magazine that skiing was “in the blood” as his parents had even met skiing.
His journey to the Olympics

By the age of 17, Hall had gained the attention of the US Ski & Snowboard team. The teen athlete didn’t have his sights set on the Olympics though.
“The Olympics weren’t always in the picture,” he told People magazine. “Maybe they just felt so far-fetched that I never really dreamed too much about them.”
Hall made his Olympics debut at the 2018 Pyeongchang Games, placing 16th overall. When he returned to the Games in 2022, the freestyle skier took home the gold.
