Roblox has pledged to improve safety through the use of artificial intelligence technology and human monitoring after a Malaysian boy allegedly stabbed his brother over a dispute linked to the online gaming platform.
Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh said the company expressed its willingness to cooperate with the Malaysian government, particularly on data sharing and compliance with regulations.
In a social media post on Monday, Yeoh raised her concerns over child safety on the popular online gaming platform.
“We want a digital world that is not only fun but builds the right character and values for the next generation,” she said.
Platforms like Roblox currently have over 100 million users globally, including more than one million in Malaysia, according to the minister.
“With such a reach, the responsibility to protect young users cannot be taken lightly,” she said.
“As the Minister of Youth and Sports and also a mother, I am concerned when I see how some online games can affect children’s behaviour and emotions.”

On October 27, a six-year-old boy was slashed by his nine-year-old brother with a sharp object in Kampung Parit Nipah in Johor’s Batu Pahat.
According to police, the incident may have occurred after the older brother became upset when the Roblox game he was playing was interrupted, causing him to lose all the points he had collected.
“The motive is still under investigation, but we discovered that he had been playing Roblox excessively on his mobile phone,” Johor police chief Ab Rahaman Arsad said.
“During questioning, the boy claimed he began experiencing hallucinations that night, as if instructed to harm his family members. He then took a knife and attacked his younger brother.”
Women, Family and Community Development Minister Nancy Shukri said the government was weighing the possibility of banning Roblox amid rising concerns over safety and content that could negatively influence young people.
She noted that the matter was still under discussion, with any final decision to take into consideration Australia’s coming regulations on Roblox, scheduled to take effect next month.
“We are closely monitoring how Australia implements these regulations. They are still in the planning stage and nothing has been enforced yet,” she said on Saturday.
“Malaysia will evaluate whether a similar approach aligns with our local context and cultural norms.”
