The constant threat of genital mutilation of her daughter and son-in-law by loan sharks was so harrowing that a woman in Malaysia has resorted to disowning her own flesh and blood.
“The loan sharks are vile. They threatened to sever the private parts of my daughter and her husband,” said the 60-year-old housewife who only wanted to be known as Heng.
“A loan shark also sent me gory photos of people with severed genitals, claiming he had carried out the acts himself. It was so upsetting that I told them to go ahead and do as they wished as I have disowned my daughter,” she said.
Heng’s peace of mind was shattered when she was bombarded with a barrage of phone calls from illegal moneylenders over loans taken by her 36-year-old daughter and her husband, who had gone into hiding last month.
Heng said she learnt that the couple had borrowed about 20,000 ringgit (US$4,928) from 20 loan sharks since 2024.
Angered by her daughter’s actions that had caused distress to her family, Heng said she no longer cares what becomes of her as she has disowned her.
“I don’t care how she’s raising the money but I expect her to settle the debts,” she told a press conference arranged by the Malaysian Chinese Association’s Public Services and Complaints Department head, Michael Chong.
In an unrelated case presented at the same press conference, a part-time accountant announced that she is disowning her younger brother after he fled in June last year, leaving their family to bear the burden of multiple loans he took from illegal moneylenders.
Chia, 54, said her 34-year-old brother was a compulsive online gambler who had chalked up debts exceeding 30,000 ringgit.
The family helped pay off the debts, hoping he would repent.
“But my brother did not change his ways. He is back in debt with loan sharks. As such, my family wishes to disown him and not take any responsibility for his debts,” she said.
Chia said she received threatening calls from loan sharks earlier this month, demanding her to settle her brother’s debts.
The loan sharks, she said, seemed to know where she lives and have details of her vehicle.
“They asked me if I wanted my car or house burned down,” she said.
Chong said apart from the phone threats, Chia’s house was also splashed with red and green paint on two occasions in July and last month.
“The intimidation by the loan sharks has been so harrowing that these two families were pushed to take the painful decision of disowning their own family members,” he said.
Both Heng and Chia have lodged reports with the Kajang and Sentul police, respectively.
