Malaysian police have received a report against Perikatan Nasional election director Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor over remarks allegedly made during a speech while campaigning for the Negeri Sembilan election.
Negeri Sembilan police chief Alzafny Ahmad said the report was lodged by a 40-year-old man at the Bandar Seri Jempol police station on Friday.
“The complainant was ­unhappy with a news report published by an online portal regarding a ­speech by the Kedah chief minister,” he said in a statement on Sunday.
“The case is being investigated under Section 505 of the Penal Code for making statements conducive to public mischief.”
DCP Alzafny said the investigation was also being carried out under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act for the improper use of network facilities or services.

“Chinese have China, Indians have India, Malays only have Tanah Melayu,” Sanusi said at a rally on Thursday, according to news portal Malaysiakini, using the term for “Malay homeland”.
His remarks raised an uproar across the political divide in the multi-ethnic country.
Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim called Sanusi’s comments unacceptable, saying that all Malaysians who upheld the constitution and contributed to the nation should be embraced, the New Straits Times reported.
While Malays were historically associated with Tanah Melayu, Malaysians came from diverse ancestral backgrounds, Anwar said.
“Malays, the majority of whom originated from Tanah Melayu, also include those with roots from Indonesia. There are also those of Chinese and Korean descent, and we cannot reject them as not being [citizens].”
Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi urged Sanusi to avoid racial and religious rhetoric during campaigning, according to broadcaster Astro Awani.
“Our country’s diversity is a natural reality, and there is no need to disturb that balance,” Zahid, who is also Barisan Nasional chairman, said on Saturday.
He suggested that the chief minister focused on managing Kedah’s affairs instead.
Pointing to Sanusi’s own ancestry – his paternal grandfather reportedly came from mainland China – Phar Kim Beng, a professor of Asean studies at the International Islamic University Malaysia, said: “The irony is difficult to ignore.”
“If Sanusi’s paternal grandfather could migrate from China, build a life in a Malay village and leave behind loyal Malaysian descendants, why should today’s Malaysian Chinese continue to have their belonging measured against an ancestral homeland that many have never seen?” Phua told Harapan Daily news portal.

Negeri Sembilan’s state election will be held on Saturday.
Alzafny said police have received 16 reports related to election offences since nomination day and have opened 11 investigation papers.
Police have received 69 applications for rallies and other campaign-­related activities on Friday, all of which were approved.
“Since nomination day, we have received 345 applications, of which 322 were approved. We will continue to enhance compliance monitoring and enforcement throughout the state election,” Alzafny said.
“The public is advised to continue complying with the law, respect the democratic process and give their full cooperation to the police to ensure the election is conducted in a peaceful, harmonious and orderly manner.”
