China’s ambassador to the United Nations said on Tuesday that Japan was “totally unqualified” to become a permanent member of the Security Council – the latest salvo in a row about the new Japanese prime minister’s comments about Taiwan.

Fu Cong, China’s permanent representative to the UN, condemned Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi’s remarks as “highly dangerous” and “extremely mistaken”.

“In light of Sanae Takaichi’s atrocious behaviour, how can the international community trust that Japan will adhere to its commitment to a peaceful path?” Fu said.

“And how can they trust that it can bear the responsibility of maintaining international peace and security?

“A country like this is totally unqualified to demand a permanent seat on the Security Council.”

Fu was speaking at a debate about reforms to make the 15-member Security Council more representative. The council’s fundamental structure has not changed since it was established at the end of World War II.
