Five Chinese nationals were killed and eight others injured in a car crash in Bali, according to China’s consulate on the Indonesian island on Friday.
The accident happened in northern Bali’s Buleleng regency, the consulate said in a statement.
The Indonesian driver sustained minor injuries, it added.
The 13 Chinese citizens were travelling in a minibus to Bali’s northern side when the driver lost control of the vehicle, veering off the road into a garden and striking a tree, according to Ida Bagus Widwan Sutadi, the police chief of Buleleng regency.
“Due to the driver’s lack of caution when turning and descending, he veered off the asphalt road and into a community garden, causing a traffic accident,” the police chief said in a statement.
The driver was arrested, he added.

Images from the accident site showed that the front end of the minibus had been mangled by the impact, its windscreen blown out and the side doors bent out of shape.
Road accidents are common in Indonesia as safety standards and infrastructure can often be poor.
The Chinese consulate said it was “maintaining close communication with Indonesian police and other relevant authorities to verify the casualties involving Chinese citizens”.
The diplomatic mission added that it was “establishing direct contact with those affected and coordinating local consular-protection volunteer groups to provide translation services for them”.
The resort island of Bali is a popular tourist destination. In 2024, Indonesia received nearly 14 million visitors from around the world, according to official data.
Of those, nearly 1.2 million were from China, making China one of Indonesia’s top sources of tourists, behind only Malaysia, Australia and Singapore.
In May, five Chinese nationals were killed in a car crash near Yellowstone National Park in the United States as their tour van collided with a pickup truck. An Italian tourist and the American pickup truck driver also died in the crash.
In one of the deadliest incidents involving Chinese tourists, 32 were killed in a bus crash in North Korea in 2018.
