The Communist Party and Taiwan’s Kuomintang (KMT) appear to be in the final stages of talks to revive an inter-party forum suspended nine years ago.

The three-day forum, designed to facilitate party-to-party communication and promote cross-strait exchanges, was scheduled to start in Beijing on January 27, Taiwan’s China Times newspaper reported on Friday.

If it takes place, it will be the first time the event has been held since 2016, when it was suspended because of tensions between the mainland and Taiwan and debate within the KMT. It was held 11 times before then.

The development represents a renewed effort by Beijing and Taiwan’s main opposition party to restore inter-party channels at a critical moment.

Cross-strait relations began declining in 2016 when Tsai Ing-wen became the island’s leader and have deteriorated under her successor, William Lai Ching-te.

Late last year, the People’s Liberation Army staged a round of massive military drills near Taiwan, saying they were aimed at deterring “Taiwan independence forces” and external intervention.
