An amateur model who fell from her boyfriend's 25th-floor flat days after withdrawing allegations of rape committed suicide, an inquest has ruled.
A jury of five yesterday gave a unanimous verdict after a four-day inquest into the death of Chan Lai-ping, 24, at the Coroner's Court. Chan's sister and mother wept after the verdict.
Chan died after falling from Kwok Wai-keung's 25th-floor apartment in Tin King Estate, Tuen Mun, at around 12.30pm on October 22, 2011.
The night school student had claimed that a man called Aaron had raped her in a hotel room on October 13, 2011.
The amateur model told officers he had photographed her in private sessions twice before, but on the third occasion, he raped her.
Chan reported the alleged rape to the police the following day and made two statements.
But on October 18, she withdrew the allegations. Four days later, she was dead.
Kwok told the court he had found out Aaron was a doctor.
Chan had been staying with Kwok after breaking up with her other boyfriend, Sin Yuk-hang, with whom she had lived for four years.
The two relationships had overlapped, but she had broken up with Sin the day before she jumped to her death.
Sin told the inquest that a police officer who had taken Chan's statement had displayed a "poor attitude".
Sin had heard the officer hitting a table inside an interview room where Chan was making her statement.
He said Chan feared the police would prosecute her after she withdrew her allegations against the doctor.
The police denied this.
Chan's mother blamed officers for failing to properly investigate her daughter's allegations.
"My daughter was too naive," she said. "She didn't know that there are people who will come out and try to trick young girls."
Chan's sister, Chan Lai-na, said she accepted the verdict of suicide, attributing it to her sister's alleged rape.
