Authorities are prosecuting the licensee of a Hong Kong branch of Japanese supermarket chain Don Don Donki after a video of a live rodent moving in the store’s sushi display chiller went viral.

The footage, posted on social media on Thursday, captured a rat scurrying across pre-packed boxes of sushi in a chiller at the Don Don Donki outlet in the Tuen Mun Town Plaza shopping centre.

In the 20-second clip, a man carrying a tote bag is seen flinching and backing away from the counter in shock after spotting the rodent, which climbs across boxes of sushi and the inner edges of the chiller before disappearing into a gap in the unit.

“That rat is freaking huge. I never want to buy Donki’s sushi ever again,” the user who posted the video wrote.

“Department staff detected traces of rats in the connected food factory and have initiated a prosecution against the licensee,” it said in a reply to queries from the South China Morning Post.
