A one-year-old boy remains in a critical condition in a Hong Kong hospital after contracting Covid-19, the second infant confirmed as severely infected with the contagious disease within a week, according to health authorities.
The Centre for Health Protection at the Department of Health said on Friday that both boys had good past health but had not been inoculated against Covid-19.
The centre urged unvaccinated high-risk groups to get vaccinated, warning that the overall Covid-19 activity could increase in the coming one or two months.
The one-year-old boy developed a fever, cough and runny nose on June 2 and the next day showed symptoms of stridor, a blockage of the upper airway.
He was admitted to Alice Ho Miu Ling Nethersole Hospital on June 4 and was later transferred to the paediatric intensive care unit at Prince of Wales Hospital due to severe croup symptoms.
The centre said the boy’s diagnosis was Covid-19 complicated with croup.
“He is currently in critical condition,” it said.

A preliminary investigation revealed that the boy had no travel history during the incubation period and his two household contacts who had developed mild respiratory symptoms from June 4 had recovered.
The second case, announced on Wednesday, involves a 19-month-old boy who developed a fever, runny nose, cough, shortness of breath and stridor on June 4.
He was taken to a private clinic before being admitted to Kwong Wah Hospital’s paediatric intensive care unit.
The boy had mostly stayed in Hong Kong throughout the incubation period. His three household contacts remained asymptomatic.
Controller of the centre, Dr Edwin Tsui Lok-kin, said the latest surveillance data showed overall local activity of Covid-19 remained at a relatively low level, despite slight increases recorded continually since early May.
“It has been nearly a year since the end of the last periodic upsurge of Covid-19 activity in Hong Kong, and it cannot be ruled out that the overall Covid-19 activity will rise further in the coming one to two months,” he added.
Tsui warned that high-risk individuals, especially young children, faced a greater threat of serious complications if they became infected, and he urged unvaccinated people and high-risk groups to take the jab or a booster shot.
