Drivers struggle through floods in Hong Kong’s New Territories amid heavy rain
Drivers navigate waterlogged roads in Tai Po and Sha Tin as two minibuses stall on Tuesday morning
The amber alert, which went out at 7.15am, is issued when more than 30mm of rain has fallen in an hour or is likely to fall generally over Hong Kong within that period and is expected to continue.
The forecaster also warned of flooding in some low-lying and poorly drained areas.
“People who are likely to be affected should take necessary precautions to reduce their exposure to the risks posed by the heavy rain and flooding,” the Observatory advised, adding that residents should stay away from watercourses as there could be flash floods.
“Showers will be heavier in some areas [on Wednesday]. The weather will still be unsettled in the following couple of days.”
Several parts of the New Territories, such as Tai Po and Sha Tin, were flooded in the morning. Buses, minibuses and private cars travelled through muddy waters that reached halfway up their wheels.
