‘Godfather of siu mei’ Chan Wing-on, founder of Hong Kong chain Tai Hing, dead at 67
Company announces group chairman’s death on Hong Kong stock exchange website on Monday; he will be succeeded by his son, Chan Ka-keung
Chan Wing-on, who founded Hong Kong cafe chain Tai Hing and became known as the “godfather” of siu mei, or Cantonese-style roast meats, among his peers, has died aged 67.
Tai Hing Group Holdings announced its founder’s death on Monday in a notice on the Hong Kong stock exchange website that evening.
“Chan Wing-on has made valuable and significant contributions to the development and success of the group with his outstanding vision and distinguished leadership over the 36 years since its establishment,” the company statement said.
“The board of directors, senior management and all employees of the group express their heartfelt respect and gratitude to Chan Wing-on for his efforts and valuable contributions to the group and the catering industry over the years.”
It added that Chan had held positions in public office and served society, while also promoting and supporting the transformation of the catering industry.
Chan and his co-founders started their first siu mei restaurant under the Tai Hing brand in Sai Wan Ho in 1989.
