Some among hundreds of Guangdong motorists who have signed up for a southbound travel scheme have driven into Hong Kong’s urban areas during the Lunar New Year holiday for offbeat sightseeing and festive shopping.

Authorities said bookings under the “Southbound Travel for Guangdong Vehicles” scheme were “favourable”, with about 500 cars expected to enter the city in the early days of the holiday.

Visitors were spotted in left-hand drive vehicles with FT-prefixed number plates. Among them were a Mini Cooper driver who parked at the Kowloon Peak viewing point at dusk on Wednesday and a visitor in a Mercedes-Benz who stopped in Shing Mun Country Park to watch monkeys.

Guangzhou resident Harry Liu drove to Hong Kong for a one-day trip on February 14.

“I’m a fan of Hong Kong’s car culture, so I wanted to see how local owners modify their vehicles and chat with them about cars,” said the 29-year-old, who owns a Mercedes-Benz.

To save money, Liu chose to stay overnight in Zhuhai instead of Hong Kong.
