Security chief Chris Tang ‘thankful’ to secure return of 29-year-old in time for Lunar New Year
Secretary for Security Chris Tang Ping-keung said on Saturday that members of his bureau’s task force had met the 29-year-old man the night before.
“When my colleague called me last night, I could feel how touched my colleague was. [The task force] could finally see that person after so long, they almost hugged each other in tears,” Tang said.
The Hongkonger was released from a compound in Myanmar on January 19 after the Thai government “pressured” authorities in the neighbouring country, according to Andy Yu Tak-po, a former district councillor who has been helping families of Hongkongers who have been tricked into forced labour in Southeast Asia.
Yu said Myanmese militia had entered the scam compound to look for the man.
The former politician on Tuesday appealed to the Hong Kong government to intervene as the man was said to be facing detention in Thailand for staying too long in the country, a measure that could keep him there for weeks despite his release.
The Security Bureau dispatched members of its task force to Bangkok on the same day to deal with the case.
