A Hong Kong court has allowed HSBC to take possession of a subsidised flat belonging to slain socialite Abby Choi Tin-fung’s former father-in-law after he failed to repay a mortgage loan of HK$2 million (US$256,964).

The District Court made the order on Wednesday after hearing that Kwong Kau, 67, did not oppose the civil claim filed by the bank earlier this year.

Kwong, a retired police sergeant, is currently detained at the maximum-security Stanley Prison pending trial for Choi’s murder.

Parts of the model’s dismembered remains were discovered in a three-storey village house in Tai Po on February 24, 2023. She was 28.

Kwong’s two sons, Anthony Kwong Kong-kit, 34, and Alex Kwong Kong-chi, 30, are also in jail awaiting their trials.

The former police officer’s ownership of the HK$2.18 million flat in Kwai Chung’s Sheung Man Court drew controversy after it emerged that a luxury home at Ho Man Tin’s Kadooria residential complex was bought under his name for HK$72.8 million in 2019.

The court heard that Kwong mortgaged his 291 sq ft subsidised flat in July 2020 to secure a HK$2.07 million mortgage loan from HSBC, but failed to repay the outstanding balance despite making some partial payments.
