Hong Kong taxi driver arrested over death of elderly woman in road accident
Cabby, 61, held on suspicion of dangerous driving after 81-year-old dies in hospital from injuries

A Hong Kong taxi driver has been arrested after allegedly driving his vehicle into an elderly woman, who later died in hospital from her injuries.
On Saturday, police reported that a 61-year-old taxi driver surnamed Lo was driving along Wah Ting Street when he turned left onto Ap Lei Chau Main Street and allegedly struck an 81-year-old woman surnamed Chou.
When officers arrived at the scene, Chou was found unconscious with a head injury. She was rushed to Queen Mary Hospital in Pok Fu Lam for treatment but was certified dead on Sunday morning at around 9.20am.
After a preliminary investigation, officers arrested Lo on suspicion of dangerous driving causing bodily injury. He was taken into custody as part of the investigation.
It remains unclear whether he will face additional charges in light of the woman’s death.
According to Transport Department figures, there were 5,714 taxi accidents last year, marking an 8 per cent increase compared with the 5,265 recorded in 2023 and a 48 per cent rise from 2020, which saw 3,857 such incidents.
