Hong Kong’s South China Morning Post wins 94 awards at news design competition

Post’s medal haul includes three gold, 11 silver and 24 bronze awards at Best of News Design Creative Competition

The South China Morning Post won 94 awards at the 46th edition of the Best of News Design Creative Competition, with an infographic illustrating the difficult living conditions of domestic helpers in Hong Kong taking home two gold and three silver medals.

Among the awards won by the Post’s graphics team that were announced by the Society for News Design on Friday and Saturday were three gold, 11 silver and 24 bronze.

That placed the Post second behind The New York Times in terms of gold medals at the competition.

Post editor-in-chief Tammy Tam congratulated the winners for their “impressive medal haul”.

“Every year our talented artists and designers compete against some of the best professionals in the news business and come out as big winners,” she said.

“Their hard work, talent and accomplishments are an inspiration and morale booster during these difficult operating times amid fast-changing technological challenges for the media industry, and reinforce our commitment to world-class journalism.”

Infographic designer Davies Surya’s Bedtime stories of Hong Kong’s helpers received two gold awards in the categories of “multiple illustrations (single subject)” and “regional/local infographics”. Surya’s visual story detailed the living conditions of three foreign domestic helpers using data, photos and videos.
