The Hong Kong Observatory cancelled the amber rainstorm warning more than two hours after it was issued on Thursday afternoon, with a trough of low pressure affecting the coast of Guangdong.
The weather forecaster sent out the warning at 4.25pm on Thursday shortly after issuing a special weather alert saying that widespread heavy rain might affect the city in a couple of hours. It was cancelled at 6.45pm.
An amber rainstorm warning means heavy rain exceeding 30mm has fallen or is expected to fall in an hour.
“There will be flooding in some low-lying and poorly drained areas,” the Observatory warned.
“People who are likely to be affected should take necessary precautions to reduce their exposure to risk posed by the heavy rain and flooding.”

The forecaster warned that heavy rain might also bring flash floods and people should stay away from the water and take precautions.
The Observatory said a trough of low pressure was affecting the coast of Guangdong and would move into the northern part of the South China Sea on Friday, continuing with showers over the region.
A strong easterly airstream will also affect coastal areas over the next couple of days, while another southwesterly airstream is expected to bring hot and showery weather next week.
Showers and occasional squally thunderstorms will continue into the following days while temperatures will hover between 25 and 28 degrees Celsius.
The Tuen Ng Festival on Saturday would still see one or two showers before the weather became hot with sunny periods and a few showers early next week, the Observatory said.
It is Hong Kong’s fourth amber rainstorm warning this year, after ones on March 15, April 25 and May 7.
