James Shing Pan-yu, former executive of Hong Kong’s defunct free-to-air broadcaster Asia Television (ATV), has died at the age of 48 after a battle against liver cancer.
Shing’s wife, Michelle Chua, revealed his death in the early hours on Monday, saying that he died peacefully at Hong Kong Sanatorium and Hospital in Happy Valley, surrounded by family.
“To all our dear friends and family, our light, James Shing, passed away peacefully at 12.37am on August 18, 2025, in the arms of his loved ones at Hong Kong Sanatorium and Hospital after 48 precious years,” Chua said on social media.
“At the time of his passing, he had a smile on his lips with relaxed eyebrows, as if resting on a cloud, untouched by pain.”
Shing was diagnosed with liver cancer in June, and his condition rapidly deteriorated, leading to his ongoing battle at the hospital’s intensive care unit.
He is survived by his wife and their seven-year-old twin children, a boy and a girl.
According to the Hong Kong Cancer Registry, liver cancer is the fifth leading cause of cancer-related deaths.
In 2022, there were 1,612 new cases of liver cancer in Hong Kong, which accounted for 4.6 per cent of all new cancer cases in the city that year.
Dr Pierre Chan, a specialist in gastroenterology and hepatology, said liver cancer was no longer a disease limited to those in their fifties and sixties, citing the rising number of cases among younger individuals linked to a combination of risk factors.
“Now we see more people in their forties getting liver cancer, but most of them have a long-term liver issue, such as hepatitis and fatty liver disease,” Chan said.
“But when you add another contributing factor like excessive alcohol consumption or improper use of certain medications, the risk of developing liver cirrhosis and cancer increases exponentially.”
He added it was crucial for those with a chronic liver condition to get check-ups every six months or at least once a year.
“These routine appointments are essential for detecting liver cancer in its earliest, most treatable stages, often before any symptoms appear. Early detection can lead to successful surgery and a full recovery,” he said.

For healthy individuals with no underlying liver issues, there was no need to be too concerned about liver cancer, Chan added.
Businessman Shing rose to public prominence when his cousin, Wang Zheng, became a major investor of ATV in 2010 and appointed the former as executive director, kicking off a controversial three-year period for the free-to-air station.
Shing was accused of allowing Wang to take de facto control of the station.
This move damaged ATV’s reputation, especially after the station had mistakenly reported the death of Chinese leader Jiang Zemin in 2011.
The Communications Authority removed Shing in 2013 for breaching licensing terms after finding Wang, who was neither a shareholder nor a director, had actual control over ATV’s operations.
In April 2015, authorities announced that ATV’s free-to-air licence would not be renewed and the station subsequently ended its terrestrial television broadcasting service and nearly 59 years of history in 2016.
