A dump truck travelling on Tuen Mun Road in Hong Kong has caught fire, causing a traffic jam stretching about 5km (3.1 miles), diversions of some bus routes, and partial closure of the busy thoroughfare.

Police received multiple reports at around 9.18am on Tuesday about a dump truck that caught fire while travelling on Tuen Mun Road towards Kowloon, close to Hung Kiu.

A dash cam video circulating online showed the truck engulfed in flames in the centre lane, with a large plume of dense black smoke rapidly filling the tunnel.

The male driver, who stopped his vehicle and escaped in time, stood at the side of the tunnel waiting for firefighters to arrive.

Police closed a section of the road, with only one of three lanes remaining open.

The force said the flame had ignited at the bottom of the vehicle and a tow truck had been arranged.
