Cheers and joy filled the air at a fundraising table tennis competition in Hong Kong, as more than 250 adults and students picked up their paddles to play with heart for a good cause.
Now in its second year, the Charity Table Tennis Tournament, organised by the Hong Kong Table Tennis Forum (HKTTF), was held at Luen Wo Hui Sports Centre in Fanling on December 7.
The enrolment fees, including 20 per cent of proceeds from singles and doubles, and 50 per cent from corporate teams, have been donated to Operation Santa Claus (OSC), the annual charity campaign co-organised by the Post and public broadcaster RTHK since 1988.
Ray Chan Shu-yan, who founded HKTTF in 2007, said the tournament aimed to spread warmth and love during the festive season.
“Table tennis is a sport for all ages and a great way to connect communities. This charity tournament turns the sport’s energy into meaningful social impact,” Chan said.
He added that HKTTF’s spirit was about “making friends through table tennis and giving back to society”.

The partnership with OSC extends the philosophy of sport to the broader community.
“The perseverance and empathy learned in competition become acts of care for others,” he said. “We hope to cultivate a charity table tennis culture, inviting other sports organisations to join and making ‘giving through sport’ a distinctive hallmark of Hong Kong.”
Although this year’s tournament was smaller in scale and participation, Chan said it still offered a rewarding experience for players.
“It was moving to see children and families stay enthusiastic, with many young participants from last year showing improved skills, a positive mindset and bringing new friends,” he said.

One passionate student player was Sophie Luk Hiu-yu, who joined the tournament for the second year and won third place in the Gold Cup under the Open U13 girls’ category.
The 13-year-old said she felt “honoured and happy” to place in the competition and highly recommended that her peers join for a good cause.
“Participants can enjoy playing table tennis and raising money at the same time to support people in need, which is truly meaningful,” said the Form Two student from HKFYG Lee Shau Kee College in Tin Shui Wai.
Her father, Terry Luk Chi-chung, said the tournament provided a valuable learning experience. “Sports and charity both bring positive energy. While enjoying sports, it’s also rewarding to give back to the community,” he said.
The tournament featured about 250 players competing in eight categories: open novelty singles for men and women, Open U13 for boys and girls, Open U11 for boys and girls, family doubles, and corporate matches.
Teams competing in the corporate category included the Law Society of Hong Kong, HKSH Medical Group, FIL Investment Management (Fidelity), and South China Morning Post.

Charlene Wong, a player from the HKSH Medical Group team that participated for the first time and won the corporate match, described the charity tournament as “joyful”.
“The atmosphere here is special and lively. Not only do we enjoy playing, but we’re also contributing to a meaningful cause,” said the radiation therapist.
OSC has raised around HK$396 million (US$51 million) for more than 365 charity projects and helped over 100,000 people since 1988.
In addition to its annual fundraising drive, it is leading an emergency appeal to meet the specific needs of residents affected by the inferno.
All proceeds will support this year’s 13 OSC-funded charity projects and community partners involved in the fire relief efforts in Tai Po.
