Hongkongers allowed to observe first open meeting of committee probing Tai Po fire
At ‘direction conference’ on February 5, committee chairman Justice David Lok will provide guidance on arrangements for coming hearings
The public will be allowed to observe the first open meeting of an independent committee investigating the cause of Hong Kong’s deadliest fire in decades, which will set the framework for subsequent hearings.
The independent committee, which was set up in the aftermath of the fire at Wang Fuk Court, announced on Tuesday that it would hold a “direction conference” on February 5.
During the conference, committee chairman Justice David Lok Kai-hong would provide instructions on the arrangements for the coming hearings, it said.
The committee said this would include identifying individuals or organisations – or their legal representatives – who intend to participate in the hearings, the language to be used, and the procedures for submitting witness statements and other documents.
“There will not be any presentation of evidence or examination of witnesses at the direction conference,” it said.
The February 5 meeting will be held at City Gallery, located at Edinburgh Place in Central.
