Hong Kong households hit by water disruptions during Lunar New Year
Further repairs needed at estate in Sau Mau Ping, while supply at two other estates restored
Thousands of households in Hong Kong had their Lunar New Year celebrations interrupted when their estates were hit by water disruptions, with further repair work in Sau Mau Ping set for Wednesday evening.
A freshwater pipe serving the lower levels of Hei Wah House at Lok Wah South Estate in Sau Mau Ping burst at 8pm on Tuesday, disrupting the water supply for 216 households, according to the Housing Authority.
The affected homes were on the second to seventh floors of the building.
A clip circulating on social media showed water gushing out from pipes and pouring to the ground from the building, forming a waterfall.
The Water Supplies Department dispatched a water wagon to provide fresh water to residents during the supply suspension.
“Following inspections and repairs by Housing Department engineers and contractors, [the] water supply was temporarily restored at around 7am [on Wednesday],” the Housing Authority said.
But the pipes concerned were still found to be leaking, and maintenance staff were scheduled to conduct follow-up repairs from 11pm Wednesday to around 7am the next day.
