A domestic helper was injured and two cats were killed in a blaze believed to have been caused by a faulty pet water dispenser at a village home in Hong Kong on Monday morning.
The fire broke out at about 11.20am in a third-floor flat in Wong Yi Au Tsuen, Tai Po.
Firefighters arrived to battle the flames and rescued a 47-year-old Indonesian helper along with two cats.
The fire was extinguished about 20 minutes later, at 11.40am.
The helper, who had inhaled thick smoke, was taken to Alice Ho Miu Ling Nethersole Hospital for treatment.
Firefighters attempted to resuscitate the cats at the scene, but both were later confirmed dead.
The owner of the cats returned to the house upon hearing of the fire and was seen in tears after finding her pets had died.
Investigators suspect the blaze was triggered by an electrical fault – such as a short circuit or overheating – linked to a pet water dispenser or its charger.

Witnesses said the fire spread quickly, with dense black smoke billowing from the flat.
A man, whose brother was the flat’s landlord, and another villager, reportedly an off-duty firefighter, rushed to the scene and tried to put out the fire with handheld extinguishers but could not contain the blaze.
They guided the panicked maid away from the smoke-filled doorway and sprayed her with water until firefighters arrived.
Police and fire officers are investigating the exact cause of the incident.
