Hong Kong Observatory cancels amber rainstorm warning, says ‘low’ chance of T3
Forecaster says Tropical Storm Maysak estimated to be about 660km southwest of Hong Kong
The Hong Kong Observatory has cancelled the amber rainstorm warning after two hours, and has said the chances of the current No 1 typhoon signal being upgraded are “relatively low”.
The Observatory cancelled the amber warning signal at 4.10pm, but warned that violent gusts could continue to affect some parts of Hong Kong.
The warning means that heavy rain has fallen or is expected to fall generally over Hong Kong, exceeding 30mm (1.2 inches) in an hour, and is likely to continue.
“Seek safe shelter immediately if you are outdoors,” the forecaster said.
The Observatory said Tropical Storm Maysak was estimated to be about 660km (410 miles) southwest of Hong Kong and was expected to move northwest at around 15km/h towards Hainan Island.
“Maysak continues to edge closer to Hainan Island. It is expected to make landfall over Hainan Island later [on Friday],” it said.
