Hiker dies on Hong Kong trail as city swelters in record-breaking heat
Filipino man, 64, was found unconscious on Plover Cove Reservoir Country Trail and later pronounced dead
A hiker died on a country trail in Tai Po on Sunday afternoon as Hong Kong endured its hottest temperatures since records began 142 years ago.
Police said they received a report at 2.17pm that a man, 64, had been discovered unconscious on the Plover Cove Reservoir Country Trail by other hikers.
Firefighters and rescue teams assembled at the reservoir dam before heading up the mountain, with the Government Flying Service also dispatched.
The Filipino man, a Hong Kong identity card holder, was located but pronounced dead at the scene. The cause of death has yet to be determined.
The deceased was wearing hiking attire at the time. His scalp was bleeding, and a nearby stone was stained with blood, a police source said.
Preliminary police observations indicated no signs of a struggle or fight at the location.
