More frequent showers expected later this week should bring relief from Hong Kong’s extreme heat, the local forecaster has said, although scorching conditions will persist in the coming days, with temperatures in some areas forecast to reach at least 37 degrees Celsius (99 Fahrenheit).
The Observatory said on Monday that outer subsiding airflow associated with Tropical Storm Dolphin continued to bring extremely hot weather to Guangdong province and Hong Kong.
The heatwave is expected to continue until Wednesday or Thursday, with high temperatures increasing the likelihood of thundery showers.
Upper-air disturbances will bring unsettled weather later in the week, with increasing showers potentially easing the intense heat, it said.
Temperatures rose above 32 degrees across much of the city on Monday morning.
Wong Tai Sin recorded the highest reading, at 35.1 degrees at 10am, followed by Happy Valley at 35 degrees.
Yuen Long Park, Sheung Shui, Tai Po, Sha Tin, Sai Kung, Kowloon City, Clear Water Bay and Shing Mun Valley all recorded temperatures exceeding 34 degrees.


A very hot weather warning remains in force, while the Labour Department has issued an amber heat stress at work warning.
Cheung Ping, a senior scientific officer at the Observatory, said that although Dolphin had made landfall in Zhejiang province, its extensive circulation meant its outer subsiding airflow was still affecting Guangdong’s coastline.
“Subsiding airflow is usually warmer and drier. It suppresses cloud formation and makes rain less likely. As a result, areas under its influence typically enjoy fine weather and continuous sunshine,” he said.
“Under the influence of this circulation, Hong Kong tends to have northerly or northwesterly winds, bringing hotter inland air towards the coastal areas.”
On Sunday afternoon, the Observatory recorded a maximum temperature of 36.9 degrees, the highest since records began in 1884.
Mercury levels in Sheung Shui reached 39.8 degrees on the same day, the city’s highest reading since the forecaster installed automatic weather stations in the 1980s.
Cheung said temperatures in inland areas, such as the New Territories, rose more sharply during daytime solar heating than in coastal districts.
“Seawater absorbs heat more slowly … It helps prevent temperatures from rising too quickly, and sea breezes also help moderate the increase in temperatures,” he said.
“Coastal areas therefore usually have lower temperatures than inland regions. In the New Territories, such as Sheung Shui and Ta Kwu Ling, daytime temperatures tend to be higher.”

The Observatory urged the public to monitor their health closely and avoid vigorous outdoor physical activity.
“Drink more water and take all necessary protective measures against the heat,” it said.
“If symptoms such as dizziness, headache, nausea, shortness of breath or confusion develop, take rest and seek help immediately, and seek medical advice as soon as possible.”
A man in his sixties was found collapsed on the Plover Cove Reservoir Country Trail in Tai Po on Sunday and was later pronounced dead. The cause of death is under investigation.
Dr Yang Siu-ming, a council member at the Hong Kong College of Emergency Medicine, said the recent hot weather posed significant health risks during outdoor activities, including heatstroke and heat exhaustion.
He advised residents to avoid outdoor activities or keep them brief.
“In cases of heat exhaustion, a person may feel very tired, sweat heavily, and experience a body cold,” he said.
“If we notice these signs of discomfort, it means the body is already sending out warnings. The person should quickly move to a shaded place and reduce outdoor activity.”
Yang added that children, pregnant women, elderly people and obese individuals were among the high-risk groups. He also urged outdoor workers to wear loose-fitting white clothing to reduce heat absorption and to drink water regularly.
