3 mainland Chinese scholars honoured as Future Science Prize returns to Hong Kong
Winners recognised for breakthroughs in autophagy, mesoporous materials and arithmetic geometry as the city hosts the event for a fourth consecutive year
Three mainland Chinese scientists have won this year’s Future Science Prize for breakthroughs in molecular mechanisms, porous materials and arithmetic geometry, as China’s first privately funded award recognising scientific achievement returned to Hong Kong for a fourth consecutive year.
Hosting the annual event multiple times underscored Hong Kong’s growing role as an international hub for scientific development, according to the organiser and Secretary for Innovation, Technology and Industry Sun Dong.
“The [prize] is now in its 11th year and, having been held in Hong Kong for the past four consecutive years, has become a major scientific event here, attracting widespread attention from the international scientific community,” he said on Thursday.
“Rooted in Hong Kong, connecting with the mainland and reaching out to the international community, the Prize actively leverages the city’s strengths as a gateway to showcase the scientific prowess and influence of Greater China to the world.”
Professor Vivian Yam Wing-wah, co-chair of the 2026 Future Science Prize Week Programme Committee, also noted “the profound significance” of Hong Kong hosting the event for four years in a row.
“It not only underscores Hong Kong’s status as an international hub for scientific communication, but also highlights the strong global competitiveness of local basic scientific research,” she said.
