Hong Kong’s leader orders swift probe into fatal plane crash, vows accountability
John Lee also extends his deepest condolences and profound sympathy to victims’ families

Hong Kong’s leader has pledged to hold accountable those responsible for a cargo plane crash that killed two airport workers, saying the government will provide all necessary resources and support for the investigation.
“I extend my deepest condolences and express my profound sympathy to the [victims’] families,” Lee said before his meeting with the city’s top decision-making body, the Executive Council.
“The government is very concerned about the incident, and we share the families’ hope to identify the cause of the accident as soon as possible. We have asked the investigation authority to conduct an in-depth investigation expeditiously.
“If there are violations of the laws or regulations, we shall hold the responsible people accountable.”
On October 20, Emirates flight 9788 from Dubai, operated by Turkish cargo charter carrier ACT Airlines, swerved off the airport’s north runway while landing and struck a security patrol vehicle, killing two airport employees.
The Boeing 747 freighter failed to stop in time and ended up in the waters off the runway along with the vehicle.
