A preliminary investigation has found that an Emirates cargo plane that veered off the runway into the sea at Hong Kong airport last month, killing two security staff, experienced an “abnormal” acceleration in one of its engines after landing, according to experts.
Two aviation experts who had analysed the report released by the Air Accident Investigation Authority on Tuesday told the Post that it was unusual for a plane to accelerate after it had touched down.
They said the cause would have to be determined by a full investigation.
Emirates flight 9788 from Dubai, operated by Turkish cargo charter carrier ACT Airlines, swerved off the northern runway while landing on October 20.
The Boeing 747 freighter struck a security patrol car, killing two airport workers, before ending up in the waters off the runway along with the vehicle.

Tuesday’s report from the authority outlined factual findings from the early phase of evidence collection but did not identify the cause of the accident.
