A man has been arrested after a collision involving more than 10 cars on a major bridge injured 11 people and forced the closure of most lanes leading to Hong Kong’s airport.
Police said 10 vehicles were travelling in the fast lane of the Tsing Ma Bridge towards the airport when the crash occurred at 8.31am on Thursday.
The chain collision was triggered by a vehicle that suddenly reduced speed, causing those behind to fail to brake in time.
Another private car overturned into the middle lane and struck a truck that was following behind.
Eleven people were sent to North Lantau Hospital with mild injuries, including seven drivers and an expat woman who was a passenger in one of the vehicles.
The force later arrested the man on suspicion of driving while disqualified and using a vehicle without third-party insurance. He was not injured and was taken to Tsing Yi Police Station.
Photographs from the scene show a vehicle flipped onto its side.
A dashcam video from one of the crashed cars, circulating on Telegram, shows a white Tesla in the same lane stopping and turning on its hazard lights seconds before the collision.
The Transport Department said at 9.35am that the lower deck of the bridge had been opened to drivers, but it was closed again after the fast lane reopened at 12.08pm.
The MTR Corporation announced it had increased services on the Airport Express and Tung Chung line, while the Ma Wan to Tsuen Wan ferry service was enhanced.
Citybus said routes to the airport could take longer than usual and reminded passengers to allow extra time for their journeys.
The transport operator added that buses on the route were using the bridge’s lower deck to reach the airport.
Long Win Bus also said its routes might be affected and delayed.
Lam Tsz-kin, a 32-year-old truck driver, told the South China Morning Post that he was travelling from Hong Kong International Airport to deliver goods in Tsing Yi when he encountered heavy congestion on the bridge at around 9am.
He said several vehicles had collided on the bridge, causing his truck to be stuck in the traffic jam for about 30 minutes before he could continue to Tsing Yi.
“It was fortunate that I set off earlier today,” Lam said. “But the traffic delay still meant my delivery was slightly behind schedule.”
A traveller surnamed Kam said he missed his flight to Taipei by several minutes due to the traffic delay and was unable to check in his luggage by the time he reached the airport.
He had to buy tickets for the next flight at double the price. He told a television news station he had budgeted extra time for the airport, but the delay lasted more than an hour.
Another traveller, who gave her name as Kitman, said she learned of the accident only after boarding a bus to the airport.
She said the crash had disrupted her plans and expressed concerns that she would not have enough time to check in due to long queues.
