A same-sex couple from Taiwan welcomed four babies through surrogacy in Mexico, sparking an online backlash with accusations of “buying babies” and “selfishness”.
The pair, a space designer surnamed Liu and his husband Lin, married in 2022. Taiwan legalised same-sex marriage in 2019, becoming the first in Asia to do so.
On November 11, the couple shared a video announcing the arrival of their four babies via surrogacy and said they had decided to document their children’s journey.
Lin revealed they had always dreamed of having children after marriage, travelling to countries like Ukraine and Colombia before finding a surrogate in Mexico.
Mexico does not have specific federal laws regulating surrogacy.
However, several regions in the country, including Tabasco and Sinaloa, have established legal frameworks for surrogacy, making them popular choices for many international would-be parents.
Lin said they were zero-experience dads, adding that the birth of their children brought them “four times the happiness”.
