China eatery owners use cancer-hit business rival’s payment QR code for a day to raise funds

Street food vendors in southeastern China have donated a day’s income to a cancer-stricken colleague who is facing high medical bills.

The touching move by stall holders took place on a food street near Fujian Normal University in Fuzhou, Fujian province on December 10.

They are trying to help Zhang Jianwu, 50, who had been making and selling pan-fried meat cake on the street until recently when he was diagnosed with kidney cancer, according to a report by Fuzhou Daily.

Zhang closed his stall to receive medical treatment at a local hospital. His family sought financial help on social media because they were unable to afford the exorbitant medical bills.

The post by Zhang’s family was seen by some university students who spread it widely online.

Food vendors on the street, including Zhang’s business rivals, went to great lengths to donate their a day’s revenue to him.

On December 10, all the stall owners changed their own payment QR code to Zhang’s. When customers bought food and paid by scanning the code, the income would automatically go into Zhang’s bank account.
