A Shanghai mother who forced her daughter to walk on her knees on a cold night has been accused of abusive parenting.
The unidentified woman meted out the punishment in their residential compound at 9pm on January 6.
Passers-by who tried to intervene were berated by the mother.
A witness, surnamed Xu, said the girl stood up when she reached the compound’s entrance gate.

Xu said the mother complained that her family was heavily in debt after buying a flat to provide a better education for her daughter.
In Shanghai, admission to primary and secondary schools is tied to flats in the schools’ neighbourhood, prompting many parents to buy pricey homes as a result.
Another passer-by was overheard telling the mother that she should not blame their own problems on the child.
Xu reported the case to a local media outlet that belongs to the Shanghai Media Group. The outlet then informed the girl’s school about the incident.

The school’s psychology counselling teacher had a conversation with the mother.
After initially insisting that her “education method” was fine, the mother then promised to avoid extreme education measures in future.
The news outlet also told the local neighbourhood committee about the case and staff said they would monitor the family.
Qiao Ying, doctor at the Shanghai Mental Health Centre, said what the mother did to her daughter was a form of emotional and physical abuse.
She said the child’s mental health needs to be evaluated immediately.
When she was humiliated in public like that, she might think she “does not deserve love”, and develop anger, anxiety and depression, said Qiao.
She also reminded parents that children abused by them might in turn abuse them in the future.

She added that parents should not take a child’s obedience for granted, but should be thankful that their children respond to their abuse with love.
A lawyer also said that the mother’s behaviour could be punishable under anti-domestic violence laws.
“The mother treated her daughter like her belonging instead of an independent person,” an online observer said.
“I think the mother also needs to see a psychiatrist,” said another.
“It is ridiculous for parents to punish their children for their academic performances. If you cannot go to top universities yourself, why do you count on your children to do so?” said a third.
