Iran has confirmed the death of its supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, in US and Israeli air strikes on the weekend, raising questions about who will next lead a country in a region bracing for further attacks.
US President Donald Trump said called Khamenei “one of the most evil people in history” and said the strikes delivered justice for Iranians, Americans and others “killed or mutilated” by him.

As the US and Israeli attacks on Iran entered a second day, Tehran declared a seven-day public holiday and 40 days of public mourning for Khamenei’s death.

Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps also targeted Israel and the US bases in the Middle East with what it called “the most devastating offensive operation in the history of the Islamic Republic”.

Trump threatened more and harder military strikes and the Israeli military began a new round of against key sites in the heart of Tehran.

Dubbed “Operation Epic Fury”, the US and Israeli air strikes against Iran began on Saturday as a “noble mission” to eliminate imminent nuclear threats, according to Trump.
