Russian attacks on Kyiv and its suburbs killed 10 people early Saturday, officials said, as Ukrainian drones sank a huge Russian container ship in the Black Sea.
The exchange in attacks come after the United Nations found June was the deadliest month for civilians in Ukraine since April 2022.
Russia has stepped up long-range strikes ⁠on ⁠the capital in recent months, while Ukraine ‌is chronically short of air defences capable of ‌downing ballistic ‌missiles, which travel at ‌several times the speed of sound.
“Fires and destruction occurred in 5 districts of the capital,” the State Emergency Service of Ukraine said on Telegram, adding that 23 people were wounded in the ballistic missile attack.
The city’s mayor reported two boys aged 13 and 17 were among the wounded.
“Explosions in the city. Kyiv is under ballistic missile attack. Stay in shelters!” Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko wrote earlier.
Several people were trapped in a partially collapsed building as a result of the ⁠strike, he said. Some warehouses were also on fire.
Journalists reported hearing explosions. More than 10 explosions were heard in a row, they said, adding that the intensity of the blasts triggered car alarms on the streets.

Ukraine, meanwhile, has escalated its retaliatory strikes on Russia in recent months, partly to pressure Moscow to the negotiating table after nearly four-and-a-half years of war.
Ukrainian drones sank a Russian-owned container ship in the Black Sea early on Saturday, forcing its 17-member crew to abandon the vessel.
The Russian-flagged “Yanina”, owned by the shipping arm of Russia’s state-owned nuclear power operator Rosatom, was sailing near the Russian port of Novorossiysk when it was hit.
The ship was carrying civilian goods including frozen food and construction materials, Rosatom said.
There was no immediate indication that the vessel was carrying out activities related to Rosatom’s nuclear arm or carrying nuclear material.
“All 17 crew members have been rescued and are in good condition,” Rosatom said on Telegram in a statement.
Zelensky confirmed Ukraine was behind the strike in a post on X, describing it as a “sanctioned Russian container ship”.
Russian online retail giant Wildberries said on Friday its logistics facility in Volgograd caught fire after an overnight attack – the latest in a series of strikes on the company’s facilities.
Kyiv has accused the e-commerce giant – which employs thousands of people and has become a key part of the economy – of storing drone parts and helping the Russian army.
Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky met US President Donald Trump this week for talks, as Kyiv and Moscow carried out long-range strikes.
Zelensky said following the meeting that Trump had agreed to license the production of Patriot missiles to Ukraine, but the US president said only that “many things were discussed” and “the meeting went very well”.
“The Russian air strikes on our country continue and air defence, specifically interceptors for Patriot systems against ballistic missiles, remains a top priority,” Zelensky said in a post on Telegram on Friday.
