Hong Kong’s drive to become a global centre for education requires a wide range of new initiatives, opening the city’s doors to students from around the world. The need to foster international exchanges between key stakeholders is one of the priorities.

Last week, the future of education was debated at the annual Principals’ Forum organised by the South China Morning Post. The event attracted around 300 heads of primary and secondary schools from the Greater Bay Area, as well as senior figures from universities and industry experts.

Secretary for Education Christine Choi Yuk-lin used her speech to announce that a “Study in Hong Kong” week will be held in February to highlight the city’s credentials as an education hub.

The minister also said Hong Kong would host the Asia-Pacific Association for International Education Conference and Exhibition next year, to be attended by higher education leaders and professionals from the region. These are welcome developments.

With its unique features, Hong Kong is well placed to develop into a leading player globally under the “Study in Hong Kong” brand. It can offer students high standards as well as the rewarding experience of studying in a part of China with strong international connections.

Hong Kong is the only city that has five universities ranked in the world’s top 100. The higher education institutions are able to attract top academics from mainland China and overseas. They are also increasingly reaching out to students from around the world.
